Calm the Flare, Restore Control.

What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition that speeds up the life cycle of skin cells. Instead of shedding normally, these cells pile up quickly on the surface, forming red, thickened, scaly patches. It’s not contagious, but it can be persistent, unpredictable, and physically uncomfortable.

Common areas affected:

  • Scalp
  • Elbows and knees
  • Lower back and buttocks
  • Genital area
  • Nails (causing pitting or separation)

In some cases, joints may also be involved, leading to psoriatic arthritis.

What Causes Psoriasis?

Psoriasis develops due to an immune system error, where the body mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells. This reaction leads to rapid skin cell production and inflammation.

Triggers can include:

  • Stress
  • Skin injury or irritation
  • Cold, dry weather
  • Smoking or obesity
  • Certain medications like lithium and alcohol
  • Infections (e.g. strep throat)

Genetics plays a strong role — family history increases your likelihood.

Diagnosis

As Expert dermatologists, we diagnose psoriasis through:

  • Physical skin examination
  • Discussion of symptoms and triggers
  • Sometimes a skin biopsy, to rule out similar conditions

There are multiple subtypes, including:

  • Plaque psoriasis (most common)
  • Guttate psoriasis (often after infection)
  • Inverse psoriasis (in body folds)
  • Pustular psoriasis (with pus-filled lesions)
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis (severe and generalized)

Proper classification guides treatment choice.
